Swedish Massage (Stress Relief Therapy)
Swedish Massage is a great place to start if you have never had massage therapy. Known for it’s long, flowing movements Swedish is considered to be a top option for over all stress relief and relaxation. Not only does your body get a chance to relax, but your mind does as well.
Generally there are five basic types of action that can be used in Swedish
>the long flowing strokes which can relax muscles and circulate lymph fluid
>kneading or pressing in order to work out knots and tension
>rhythmic tapping which can help relax spasms and release tight muscles
>friction is often used to help relax the muscles and stimulate nerves with deep circular motions
>vibration is used to circulate blood which deepens relaxation and eases pain
As one of the most requested treatment modalities, Swedish may be just what you need.
Deep Tissue Massage (Neuromuscular Therapy)
Deep tissue massage shares some similarities to Swedish, but employs more pressure by various means to help break up clusters and knots deep within the muscles. Deep tissue is often the technique of choice for sports recover and physical therapy.
It is one of the most popular forms of relaxation and recovery therapy in the world today. Researchers have found that as little as 45-60 minutes of deep tissue massage can have health benefits including reducing chronic pain, lowering blood pressure, reducing stress hormones and even lowering your heart rate.
Inflammation is often the source of chronic pain deep in the bodies tissues. Deep tissue is able to reduce that pain by reducing the inflammation in the tissue. Another benefit is that the blood flow will be greatly increased which aids in healing and helps to reduce pain. Your therapist will seek out these clusters of tight tissue and work them out, providing much needed relief to those tense muscles of yours.
People often wonder if deep tissue massage hurts. Yes and no! Generally if a client is in pain the muscle will clench which makes working the muscle difficult. With this in mind, your massage therapist will warm up your tissues and get the blood flowing before working on painful areas. Good communication with your therapist is essential in order to meet your comfort levels. Sometimes certain areas CAN indeed be painful when working to break up these clusters and knots and deep scar tissue. Carrying this deep tension not only impairs movement, but also causes inflammation and stress. Just just imagine how much better every part of your life will be once you finally achieve a body with less pain and built up tension.
With so many people experiencing the symptoms of restless legs, doctors often prescribe medications which offer varying degrees of relief. Maybe you are even some of medication? If so that is perfectly alright.
Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS is a neurological condition which causes a sense of discomfort, pain or a feeling like you need to move your legs. This may lead to a reduction of sleep quality for you and your partner due to kicking or general restlessness at night. Medical science hasn’t isolated precisely what it triggering this restlessness, but research has shown that massage therapy can offer a degree of relief through ongoing treatment.
Often times, clients with RLS will have very tight muscle knots and high tissue density especially in the calves, but also in the thighs, hamstrings and glutes! As your massage therapist works through your muscle layers, these knots and trigger points will present themselves as physical hard spots and often display spasms.
Using a variety of techniques such as myofascial release and deep tissue massage, your massage therapist will help the tissue in these areas begin loosening up and letting go of that tension and irritation. This in turn eases the irritation of the nerves in the lower extremities and sciatic region. Click HERE to learn more!
